Packed with culture, adorned with stunning islands and absolutely brimming with life, a trip to Dar es Salaam deserves a firm place on your bucket list. The only question is - what should you do first?
Sailing, snorkelling and sunbathing
Everybody dreams of the perfect tropical island: and luckily, Dar es Salaam sits next to five. Clustered together, the Bongoyo, Pangavini, Fungu, Yasini and Mbudya islands are both a marine reserve and beach lover’s paradise. Sail around the islands’ shores or snorkel in the crisp waters of the Indian Ocean (with the help of an experienced tour guide) to spot dolphins, crabs and tropical fish at play. Alternatively, keen sunbathers should prioritise the paradisiacal Mbudya Island for a visit. There, you’ll find white beaches and tropical weather that exceeds even your highest expectations.
Experience local lifestyles
Dar es Salaam has an incredibly rich and diverse culture. Get up with the sun to visit Kivukoni fish market, where you can taste fresh fruits of the sea while watching the early morning fish auctions. As the city was originally a fishing town, this local activity is an excellent way to glimpse its (delicious) heritage. Afterwards, visit the Tinga Tinga Arts Co-operative Society to watch local artisans at work and pick up a unique souvenir. Wrap up your day of living like a local with a beach party at Coco Beach, whose mix of events offers live music, dancing and karaoke nights.
Get lost in the wilderness
Though Dar es Salaam is a thriving commercial hub of more than four million people, some of Tanzania’s most exceptional feats of nature are just a 10-minute drive away. Glimpse lions, zebras, baboons, impalas, elephants and more on safari treks such as Waterbuck Safaris, Breakdown Safaris and Usambara Expeditions. Alternatively, get a flash tour of an entirely different way of life by visiting the Maasai Tribe, where you’ll learn all about their traditional culture, history and beliefs. Your hotel should be able to help you book any number of excursions - just let them know which ones you’d like to do.
