Venture to the Land of Frankincense

Set your compass for the southern Dhofar region, which is home to the Boswellia sacra tree. Head on through the UNESCO-protected trade route from Wadi Dawkah. You’ll venture through 5,000 frankincense trees which punctuate the mountain landscapes and emerald-green pastures. You’ll learn how the crystallised sap is harvested as you pass through, and can find out about its production at Salalah Museum.

Stroll along the seafront

Rub shoulders with locals on the sweeping Muttrah Corniche, where the city’s old trade hub continues to flourish. Ancient merchants’ houses and vibrant minarets are dotted along the seafront, where you’ll wander past keen fishmongers selling tuna, mahi-mahi and lobsters - all freshly caught each morning. Be sure to visit at sunset - the views are a dream.

Marvel at mosques in Oman

Eight tonnes of chandelier. 600,000 Swarovski crystals. It sounds like the centrepiece of a movie star mansion, but it’s actually the heart-melting beauty within Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat. Step inside the main prayer hall onto the second-largest hand-loomed Persian carpet, which took 600 women four years to weave. Mosaics adorn domes and pillars in dazzling blues and greens, and the structure itself accommodates 20,000 worshippers.

For a small nation on the Arabian Peninsula, Oman packs in boundless beauty. Wild landscapes range from towering dunes to deep mountain gorges, but what really makes the country’s landscapes unique is its fjords - where dolphins and dhows cut through aquamarine waters, giving it its nickname ‘Norway of the Middle East’.

Seek out the souks

Follow the aroma of frankincense through narrow passages into a fantasy of charming souqs in Oman’s cities, where you’ll experience true Omani culture. Muttrah, is a souq in Muscat that flaunts everything from persian-blue pashminas to azure-clawed crabs, while Nizwa is home to one of the oldest souqs in the country, rammed with fruits, vegetables, livestock and local crafts. Embroidered ‘kuma’ hats, handmade pottery, Omani silver jewellery, incense powders - you’re bound to find souvenirs in these bustling trade hubs.

Dine Omani-style

Oman’s restaurants are some serious foodie hotspots and they’re very different from anywhere in the Middle East, with ingredients ranging from saffron to shark. Do breakfast like a champion with razor-thin Omani flatbreads loaded with creamy cheese and fluffy eggs. Tuck into desserts stuffed with dates, honey and rosewater, washing them down with a sweet tea. Oman cuisine mixes a range of chicken, beef, lamb, and vegetable dishes, pairing with rice and borrowing Asian flavours to make unique delicacies you’re sure to fall in love with.

Camp with the camels

Red-gold sand as far as the eye can see, in every direction. Boundless dunes rippling and rolling with the wind and jaw-dropping sunsets. Stretching between Muscat and Sur, the Wahiba Sands are home to the Bedu - offering the most authentic way of experiencing life in the desert. A day trip spent on an Oman desert safari, dune bashing, quad biking or camel riding is astonishing alone, but camping for the night - watching shooting stars fly over your head is pure magic.

Visa

Depending on the nature of your trip and the country you come from, you may need a visa to enter Oman. Check with the embassy before you book your ticket – the Royal Oman Police website has plenty of information to help.

Currency

Oman uses the Omani Rial (OMR) as its main currency, with currency notes available in the following denominations: 1,5,10,20,50,100,200,500.

Language

The official language of Oman is Arabic. However, there are several languages scattered among the regions, including English, Urdu, Hindi, Jibbali, Swahili, and French.

Weather

Prepare for a hot climate when you fly to Oman. The coldest it gets is 21°C in January, with highs of 40°C in June.

Getting around

You can flag down a taxi in Salalah and Muscat or take the bus, but the best (and easiest) way to see the county is by car. Book up for a tour, hire a driver or get behind the wheel yourself.
