Spectacular Masjid al-Nabawi is built on the site of the Prophet’s home and is a must-visit while in Madinah. Wander the mosque’s remarkable interior – its scale and beauty is incredible. The iconic green Dome of the Prophet rises above the sea of white domes, marking the resting place and sacred tomb of the Holy Prophet. Go here to pay your respects and truly experience this holy destination. Close to the central mosque, you’ll find Hejaz Railway Museum. Explore the Ottoman-style train station and wander through the exhibits of antique train carts and relics. Venture to the outskirts of the city to visit Quba Mosque, thought to be the oldest of its kind in the world. Its first stones are believed to have been laid by the Prophet Muhammad himself. Although rebuilt in the 20th century, the historic building retains some of its original architectural style.

Explore natural wonders 

Head north of the city and climb the slopes of Mount Uhud. From the top, you can enjoy brilliant views of the valley below, a burial ground for 70 martyrs who died in the Battle of Uhud. Further out of Madinah, you’ll discover Jabel Magnet - this mystical spot has been puzzling people for years. Gravity is said to have been reversed in this pocket of Saudi mountainside, mysteriously pulling you up the slope. Go there to experience this startling trick of the mind and try it out for yourself.

Indulge with a shopping trip

Soak up the hustle and bustle of the city’s traditional bazaars. Explore the open air markets and pick up souvenirs, including shoes, perfume and local produce. Contrast this with a shopping expedition at Al Rashid Mega Mall – a shopaholic’s paradise. Hit the boutiques, watch a movie and grab a bite to eat at one of the onsite restaurants.

Visa

Before you fly to Madinah, contact your local embassy to find out whether you’ll need a visa to enter the country. Please note that parts of central Madinah are open to Muslims only. Check your itinerary before you depart.

Currency

While in Madinah, you’ll use the Saudi Riyal (SAR). Frequently used notes include: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500.

Language

Arabic is the official language of Saudi Arabia, although English is also widely spoken throughout the country.

Weather

Temperatures peak during summer months, reaching an average of 40°C during August. It gets cooler throughout winter, with temperatures falling to an average of 18°C during February.

Getting around

Taxis are the best way to make your way around Madinah - look out for official ones whizzing around the roads.

When you fly to Madinah, you’ll arrive into and depart from Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED). It’s located close to the city centre, just a 25-minute car journey away.
