Experience local culture at Lohuti Street
Get a taste for local life along bustling Lohuti Street, where you can explore Shah Mansur Bazaar. Here, you can sit and watch the world go by or browse the many colourful and fragrant stalls lining the market. Pick up fresh fruit and vegetables as well as homemade bread and rich yoghurts.
From here, stroll to the Ayni Opera & Ballet Theatre. Dating back to the 1940s, this historic venue plays a big part in the country’s culture. Set in a grand period building built in neoclassical style, the interior is equally as grand, with red and gold décor giving it a vibrant shimmer. Book tickets to catch one of the regular dance and theatre shows gracing the stage.
Explore Rudaki Park
Nestled in the heart of the city, leafy Rudaki Park is a tranquil place to visit. Stroll around the vast green space and enjoy a picnic among the quaint floral gardens that bloom beautifully during spring.
Venture through the trees until you find the monuments lining the southern perimeter. Peer up at the impressive Ismoil Somoni statue, standing more than 25 metres high. A golden dramatic arch circles the bronze monument that celebrates the founder of the Samanid dynasty. Also near to the park is the momentous Stele with the Emblem of Tajikistan. Perched on a pyramid of steps, the white and gold monument reflects the city’s turbulent past.
Discover Dushanbe’s history
Learn about the country’s history and culture at the National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan. Using interactive exhibits and preserved relics, you’ll be taken on a journey through Central Asia’s heritage. The highlight of the museum is the giant 13-metre-long reclining Buddha.
Move from one collection to the other, as the Ethnography Museum is also housed here. Discover the country’s textile heritage by examining the traditional collection of Tajikistan clothing, jewellery and silks on show.
If you’d like to trace more history, travel just 30 km out of the city to the mountains where the 18th century Hissar Fort sits perfectly preserved. Wander through the imposing gateway into the complex and see the ruins within.
