Trace Sofia’s history

Begin your visit at one of Bulgaria’s oldest churches, Sveta Sofia Church, which was built in the Byzantine era by Emperor Justinian. Wander through the cavernous main hall where candle chandeliers cast shadows on the ancient arches. Nearby you’ll also find Aleksander Nevski Cathedral, Sofia’s most prominent landmark and symbol of the city. Admire the dramatic architecture of this multi-domed monument that was built in the early 20th century. Step inside to find Byzantine-style mosaics glistening in the candle light or attend one of the daily services and hear the atmospheric orthodox chants through a haze of incense. Uncover the Roman history of the city with a visit to the National Museum of Archaeology. Housed in a 15th century former mosque, this vast museum is the oldest in Bulgaria. The collection displays artefacts and ancient treasures spanning a millennia of history, including the Roman tombstones and the mosaic floor from the Church of Sveta Sofia.

Discover a different side to the city

Sofia may be deep rooted in history, but there’s a thriving contemporary cultural scene here, too. Sofia Opera and Ballet offers a taste of it – head to the venue to watch a world-class performance. Make your way to National Gallery Quadrant 500 to see thousands of paintings from both the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the works you can spot sketches from the likes of Renoir and Matisse. The City Art Gallery is also worth a stop to see some of the country’s best contemporary art hung upon the walls.

Go on a shopping expedition

Make sure you’ve got plenty of space in your baggage, as there are plenty of boutiques and markets in Sofia for you to pick up souvenirs. The country is famed for its rose oil production and at Rose of Bulgaria, you can buy everything from soaps to perfumes. If you’re after locally-made meats and cheeses for a picnic, head to the Ladies’ Market, where you’ll find stalls piled high with produce.

Whether or not you’ll need a visa to enter Bulgaria will depend on your home country. Please check with your embassy before your flight to Sofia.

While in Sofia you’ll use the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Frequently used banknotes include: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100.

Language

Bulgarian is the official language used in Bulgaria, though you may also find that Turkish, Romani, and English are also spoken.

Sofia enjoys a seasonal climate, with average lows of -5°C in winter, rising to average highs of 28°C in summer.

Getting around

A network of trams, buses, and a metro can help you easily navigate around Sofia. Taxis are also found in the city if you’d prefer to travel from door to door.

Airport information

You’ll arrive into and depart from Sofia Airport (SOF). The city centre is only a short journey away – you can either use one of the public buses, take a taxi or hire a car through flydubai.
