The trick to visiting Belgrade is to snatch as many cultural morsels as you can from its plethora of museums. The Museum of Contemporary Art and its surrounding sculpture park should be top of the itinerary, as well as Zepter Museum’s vast collection of modern Serbian art.

Belgrade is Serbia’s capital and one of the oldest cities in Europe. From its Old Town to its freshly revamped Savamala district, the city is one of contrasts. It’s also famous for its nightlife and boasts two rivers for the price of one - the Danube and Sava both run through the up-and-coming destination. 

The city that never sleeps

Summertime in Belgrade means parties on splavovi (moored river boats). The capital’s waterways provide unforgettable nights during the warmer months, as revellers flock to the Danube and Sava for good times. But nightlife isn’t reserved for warmer nights, visit any time of the year and you’ll be smitten by the eclectic party scene - everything from jazz to techno is brought to life through venues in the city.

Belgrade bites

Belgrade defies you to find a bad meal. The city’s traditional kebabs are the kind of food that has you thinking about it for years afterwards. These cevapi (kebabs) are made of grilled minced meat, sprinkled with chopped onion and sour cream. But not everything is quintessentially Serbian where foodie joints are concerned. Belgrade is home to some of the funkiest eateries, from gastro gem Enso immaculately plating up foie gras parfait, to ultra-hip Supermarket Talas dishing out homemade spicy sausages.

Museums for everyone

The Museum of Yugoslavia fits in nicely with the city’s old soul. There are more than 200,000 artefacts to ponder over - all documenting the wildly interesting history of Yugoslavia. If you’d prefer something a little different, enter a world of sci-fi fabulousness at the Nikola Tesla Museum. The famous scientist’s ashes are kept in a glowing, golden orb here, as are numerous exhibitions devoted to his pioneering work.

Visa

Currency

The Serbian Dinar (RSD) is used in Belgrade. Frequently used notes are: 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000.

Language

Serbian is the official language of Belgrade, but English is becoming more widely spoken.

Weather

Belgrade is humid and subtropical, but gets cold in the winter. Average temperatures fluctuate from 1°C in January and highs of almost 32°C in July.

Getting around

Belgrade saves you a lot of walking with its extensive public transport system. Buses, trams and trolleybuses are all readily available across the city and are pleasingly cheap. That said, exploring compact areas like Stari Grad (Old Town) is easy to do on foot.

Airport information

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) is less than 18 km away from the capital itself. When you reach the airport, order an official taxi from the desk in the baggage hall - you’ll get a better value price.
