Things to do

Marvel the architecture

The famous Red Fort bursts with burnt-brick glory. Step through the Lahori Gate into the landmark and imagine the last days of the Mughal dynasty, wandering through the Royal Baths, the Pearl Mosque and the striking Palace of Colour. You won’t be able to stop clicking your camera when you reach Lotus Temple. The flower-shaped house of worship, surrounded by lush landscaped gardens, is a real mindblower.

Experience luxurious high tea

It’s easy to envision older and grander days of the Raj when you make time for a classic three-tiered high tea at The Imperial Hotel. From the 1911 restaurant to the chandelier-adorned atrium, it’s the very definition of colonial glamour. Here you’ll find plenty of joyful customers filling up on perfectly piped cakes, washed down with a piping cup of Darjeeling tea.

Relish a street food treat

Dilli-ki-Chaat is a big to-do in Delhi. It’s the name for the capital’s tangy street food, which encompasses everything from chaat papadi to golgappas, both spicy delights are loaded with potato and fried to perfection. Don’t miss a dosa - the best place to sink your teeth into one is at Saravana Bhavan in Janpath. Finish it off by embracing a perfect cup of south Indian coffee.

A guide to Delhi

India’s heart beats in its capital. Split into old, new and south Delhi, the diverse city has some serious historic sights to see - from the former home of Mughals to the biggest mosque in the country. Pay homage to the arts or drink in the sweet sound of qawwalis. Fill your face in foodie bazaars, lose yourself to shopping and then do absolutely nothing at all in the tranquil parks that punctuate the city.

Delhiite dining

Heavenly cooking aromas will follow you around every corner in Delhi. Follow your nose to the immaculate Rajdhani, over the road from Rivoli cinema, and order a gujarati thali. If you’re hankering for some meat, try the kebabs at Al-Jawahar - the much-lauded institution is famed for them.

Street markets

Meander through narrow bazaars of Old Delhi and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported there from another century. The Dilli Haat draws keen-eyed customers seeking everything from Jaipuri blankets to Madhubani paintings and solid Khurja pottery, while the district of Hauz Khas attracts stylish travellers with its art, fashion and antique boutiques. Delhi’s government emporiums on Janpath are another perfect place to purchase Indian craft.

Peace and quiet

Gandhi’s tomb is a simple but striking experience in the Indian capital. It lies within its own intensely serene gardens - it doesn’t get more peaceful than this, so be sure to soak up your surroundings before heading back to the bustling city. Another antidote to buzzy backstreets is the Garden of Five Senses. It does exactly what the name suggests - provides a sensory delight with tinkling wind chimes, trickling fountains, pretty sculptures and hundreds of plants.
