Don’t miss a dosa - the best place to sink your teeth into one is at Saravana Bhavan in Janpath. Finish it off by embracing a perfect cup of south Indian coffee.

India’s heart beats in its capital. Split into old, new and south Delhi, the diverse city has some serious historic sights to see - from the former home of Mughals to the biggest mosque in the country. Pay homage to the arts or drink in the sweet sound of qawwalis. Fill your face in foodie bazaars, lose yourself to shopping and then do absolutely nothing at all in the tranquil parks that punctuate the city.

Heavenly cooking aromas will follow you around every corner in Delhi. Follow your nose to the immaculate Rajdhani, over the road from Rivoli cinema, and order a gujarati thali. If you’re hankering for some meat, try the kebabs at Al-Jawahar - the much-lauded institution is famed for them.

Street markets

Meander through narrow bazaars of Old Delhi and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported there from another century. The Dilli Haat draws keen-eyed customers seeking everything from Jaipuri blankets to Madhubani paintings and solid Khurja pottery, while the district of Hauz Khas attracts stylish travellers with its art, fashion and antique boutiques. Delhi’s government emporiums on Janpath are another perfect place to purchase Indian craft.

Peace and quiet

Gandhi’s tomb is a simple but striking experience in the Indian capital. It lies within its own intensely serene gardens - it doesn’t get more peaceful than this, so be sure to soak up your surroundings before heading back to the bustling city. Another antidote to buzzy backstreets is the Garden of Five Senses. It does exactly what the name suggests - provides a sensory delight with tinkling wind chimes, trickling fountains, pretty sculptures and hundreds of plants.

You may need to apply for a visa to enter India, so check with your embassy before you travel.

Currency

The currency in Delhi is the Indian rupee (INR). The most frequently used notes are: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 2,000.

Language

The official language in Delhi is Hindi, although English, Punjabi and Urdu are also widely spoken.

Weather

Delhi is hot all year round, with highs of 46°C between April and June and lows of 5°C between November and January. 

Getting around

Delhi has plenty of transport options to help you get around the city with ease. You can take the metro, bus or taxi which serve most touristic areas. For speedy access around the centre, use an autorickshaw, but be sure to agree a fare before you set off as they aren’t metred. You can also hire a car with flydubai and make your own way around the city.

Airport information

Delhi International Airport (DEL) is 16km from New Delhi city centre and 15km southwest of the New Delhi railway station. To get to downtown, take the metro to New Delhi - the orange line will get you there in less than 20 minutes. Taxis, buses and autorickshaws are also available to take you into the centre. You can also pick up your flydubai hire car from the airport.
