Take a day trip to Elephanta

Uncover atmospheric Buddhist and Hindu temples hewn into the rock on an island 10km from Mumbai. Once ashore, explore the Elephanta Caves, a warren of cave temple dating back to the 5th century, filled with rock carvings and twisting vines.

Built in the early 20th century, it’s a testament to the grandeur of the British Raj. Stand beneath the gateway and take pictures of its intricate decorative motifs. From here, head to the iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to witness its opulence. This luxury hotel was only built in 1903 but soon became a famous monument in Mumbai. Stop for lunch in one of the grand dining rooms or embark on a guided tour to discover more about its history. For the ultimate experience, splash out on a night’s stay in one of the lavish rooms. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is another must-see. The jaw-dropping façade is a thing of beauty, featuring a blend of Victorian, Hindu and Islamic architectural styles.

Experience bustling Mumbai at its best with a trip to Crawford Market. Haggle with traders and get locally-made garments, handicrafts and spices at discount prices to take home with you. The Colaba Causeway street market is also worth a stop – along this retail stretch you can pick up more souvenirs, with jewellery and artefacts up for grabs.

Take a day trip

Catch the ferry from the Gateway of India to the beach town of Alibaug, just under 3 and a half hours away. Explore the old fish market, admire the ancient forts overlooking the town and relax on the sand at VarsoliBeach. Sanjay Gandhi National Park is also nearby. Travel to this slice of tropical paradise and you can discover ancient caves, beautiful waterfalls and see a vast range of wildlife.

Currency

While in Mumbai you’ll use the national currency, the Indian Rupee (INR). Frequently used notes include: ₹5, ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹500, ₹2000.

Language

Mumbai’s official language is Marathi, although you’ll find Hindi, English and Gujarati are also spoken in the city.

Weather

The weather is warm year-round in Mumbai, with average temperatures rarely dipping below 15°C, often hitting highs of 30°c. Monsoon season falls between June and September.

Getting around

While in Mumbai, there are plenty of taxis, autorickshaws and buses available to help you get around. The train and Metro network are in operation, too. If you’d prefer to explore at your own pace, hire a car with flydubai.

Airport information

You’ll fly in and out of Mumbai International Airport (BOM) while visiting the city. To get to and from the city, either hire a car, book a taxi or catch one of the local trains or buses.
