This city is a charming fusion of modern aspiration and outstanding natural beauty - so whether you’re visiting to trek snow-capped mountains or to explore glitzy shopping malls, Almaty has it all. Explore museums, stroll through leafy parks, trek alpine national parks or tuck in to delicious cuisine as you discover Kazakhstan’s largest city.
Uncover green spaces and impressive architecture
Almaty is a place where striking skylines and natural landscapes rub shoulders happily. Venture to Panfilov Park and wander around this tranquil spot to get away from the buzz of the city. On your walk, you’ll come across the arresting Zenkov Cathedral. Not only is this elaborate building incredible to look at, it’s also a fantastic feat of engineering. Almost magical in its architecture, the structure is made entirely out of wood, without any nails holding it together. For another dose of greenery, head to Central Park, where you can enjoy long walks through beautiful gardens. There’s something for the kids too, with the fun fair promising a day of outdoor excitement.
Explore natural wonders
This city is perfectly placed for the intrepid traveller to discover some of Kazakhstan’s most beautiful natural wonders. The Ile-Alatau National Park is right on the city’s doorstep and offers you more than 2000 sq km of mountainous terrain to explore. You may not have time to see it all but, if you do visit, the highlights include the Turgen Gorge where you can trek the valley, heading from waterfall to waterfall. You should also see Big Almaty Lake when you explore. Framed by rugged alpine terrain and lush green forests, this glacial lake stands out like a vibrant blue jewel amongst the craggy peaks.
Swap the snow-topped mountains for extraterrestrial landscapes when you venture to Charyn Canyon. Deep red, stark and striking, this beautiful corner of the country is reminiscent of the iconic Grand Canyon and definitely worth a visit.
Embark on a shopping expedition
Take on a shopping trip like no other and visit the huge Barakholka flea market. When you arrive you’ll be greeted with all the sounds, smells and sights of the bustling stalls. From food to souvenirs, live animals to rugs, everything you can imagine is on sale in this colossal market.
Sample the local cuisine
While in the city, tuck in to some of the region’s signature dishes for a real taste of the local cuisine. Try beshbarmak and enjoy a meal of slow-cooked meat, usually mutton or lamb, with noodles and a flavoursome stock. If you can, sample shashlyk while in the city. This dish involves tasty cuts of mutton, skewered and barbecued over a bed of charcoal for a smoky dish.
