Bishkek - and Kyrgyzstan in general - are renowned for heart-stopping landscapes, gorges, canyons, hot springs, mountains and parks. Explore the country’s unspoilt outdoors and breathe in revitalising mountain air. The hills are home to snow leopards and friendly red squirrels, but be sure to pack lunch - services and amenities are sparse in this wild wonderland.

The Great Silk Road once brought most travellers through Kyrgyzstan and today, the well-preserved 15th century Tash Rabat brings that era to life. Every corner you turn in this ancient stone building unveils dome-shaped rooms - a genuine treat for history lovers.

Bishkek is revered for its laidback vibe. Friendly Kyrgyz sip piping hot brews in sleepy cafes, feet tapping to chilled-out tunes. If you’re feeling peckish, pop into the much-lauded Supara Ethno-Complex – join locals dining out at the authentic eatery and soak up the pretty mountain views.

Head deep into the Chuy Valley to visit a museum like no other. Looming 9th-century minaret Burana Tower overlooks sprawling plains, with a base full of exhibits for you to explore. If you want to stay in the city, make for the Fine Art Museum, which boasts two floors of Soviet-era paintings, embroidery and felt rugs. Another must-visit during your time in Bishkek is the State History Museum – wander the exhibitions for a fascinating insight into the city’s past, with Soviet heritage pieces and ancient Kyrgyz crafts to see.

Hot springs and forests

If you thought Bishkek’s city centre was green, wait until you see what’s beyond it. Ala Archa National Park is an explorer’s haven, peppered with mountains, waterfalls and emerald forests.
