If you’re wandering into the centre of town, do it via Erkindik Boulevard - a beautiful avenue that’s perfect for strolling, running, ice-cream-slurping or simply sitting down read a book.

Museums and monuments

Head deep into the Chuy Valley to visit a museum like no other. Looming 9th-century minaret Burana Tower overlooks sprawling plains, with a base full of exhibits for you to explore. If you want to stay in the city, make for the Fine Art Museum, which boasts two floors of Soviet-era paintings, embroidery and felt rugs. Another must-visit during your time in Bishkek is the State History Museum – wander the exhibitions for a fascinating insight into the city’s past, with Soviet heritage pieces and ancient Kyrgyz crafts to see.

Hot springs and forests

If you thought Bishkek’s city centre was green, wait until you see what’s beyond it. Ala Archa National Park is an explorer’s haven, peppered with mountains, waterfalls and emerald forests. Meanwhile, the hot springs of Altyn Arashan’s lush valleys are trekking gold. Lookout for the snow leopards and bears that call this pocket of Kyrgyzstan home.

Visa

Depending on the country you’re travelling from, you may not need a visa to enter Kyrgyzstan if you’re staying for less than 60 days. Contact your embassy for more information before flying to Bishkek.

Currency

The currency in Bishkek is the Kyrgyzstani Som (KGS) and the currency symbol is лв. The capital uses a range of notes in the following denominations: 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000.

Language

The official languages of Kyrgyzstan - and those spoken throughout Bishkek - are Kyrgyz and Russian. You may also hear locals speaking in Uzbek.

Weather

Expect cold winters and hot summers in Bishkek. Average temperatures can dip as low as -8°C during winter, with the summer bringing with it highs of 33°C.

Getting around

Explore Bishkek by taxi or hop on one of regular minibuses or ‘marshrutkas’ covering major parts of the capital. If you want your own two wheels, it’s best hiring a car at the airport, as this service can be hard to find in the city.

Airport information

Bishkek’s Manas International Airport (FRU) is 16 miles northwest of the city centre, connected by a six-lane highway which runs from the city. Taxis are plentiful at the airport and if you’re looking for a cheaper option to return, travel via marshrutka (minibus).
