Encompassing the Sabarmati River, the historic city of Ahmedabad combines a real blend of the contemporary with historic culture. With an ancient old town and an exciting entertainment hub sitting side by side, there’s plenty to discover within this enchanting city.
Discover Ahmedabad’s past
Ahmedabad has several interesting museums where you can delve into its rich and storied heritage. One of the most popular is the Lothal Archaeological Museum. Visit to see three galleries worth of excavated artefacts from ancient Indus Valley settlements. Marvel at terracotta ornaments, ivory objects, tools, potteries and human figurines, blessed during burial rituals centuries ago.
Take the pilgrimage to the last residence of Mahatma Gandhi and sink into the serenity of the Sabarmati Ashram. In the museum, discover more about the freedom struggle and the ashram’s significance during the epic historic strife. Learn about the famous 1930 Salt March, during which Gandhi lead thousands from the ashram to the shores of Dandi, from the many interesting exhibits.
Visit the temples and tombs
Religiously diverse, Ahmedabad is brimming with centuries-old temples, mosques and mausoleums, many of which are perfectly placed in the picturesque old town. Visit the vibrant, 200-year-old Hindu Shri Swaminarayan Temple in the Kalupur district of the old town. Gaze in awe at its ornate Burmese teak wood archways and the engraved columns that make up the stunning central gateway.
Discover early Islamic architecture, at the ancient Sarkhej Roza, with its Persian, Jain and Hindu features. Just 7km south-west of the city, this elegant 15th-century mosque and tomb complex can be explored.
Enjoy the attractions by Kankaria Lake
Stroll around Kankaria Lake, the biggest lagoon in Ahmedabad, in the south-eastern part of the city. The area is the entertainment hub of the region, with adventure rollercoasters, water rides and a large aquarium to enjoy. Whilst there, visit the popular Kamlanehru Zoo and walk along the promenade to the centre of the lake, where a light show takes place most evenings.
If you’re interested in something a little more low-key, take a stroll around the Butterfly Park for a moment of peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There’s something that the whole family can enjoy down by Kankaria Lake.
