Fall in love with Astana, a historic city dressed up with a futuristic skyline. Ambition is fuelling growth in the city, with more and more buildings sprouting up and punctuating Kazakhstan’s blue skies.

Admire the contrasting architecture

Astana truly is a visual delight to behold. Traditional Soviet-era buildings sit side by side with modern constructions that look like they’ve been transported from the future. Spend a day wandering through the capital and admire the contrasting design of the skyline.

Built in 1998, the two Golden Towers stand parallel, framing the Presidential Palace. In the light, these skyscrapers take on a dazzling glimmering look. Walk between the towers down the stretching floral courtyard to view the palace up close in all its glory. At 260 feet tall, the Ak Orda Presidential Palace acts as a symbol of the city. Take snaps of the eye-catching blue dome roof, pierced with a golden spire, that decorates the formal columned structure.

From here, stroll along to see the UFO-shaped Metropolitan Circus, as well as the gigantic glass Shabyt artistic hub. The Central Concert Hall is also worth a visit - its curved walls are a fascinating sight from all angles. Built in 2009, the building forms abstract petals of a flower and is the perfect example of the innovative approach to architectural design that defines the aesthetics of Astana.

Step back in history

The unique blend of architectural styles throughout Astana indicates the country’s colourful heritage. Learn all about Kazakhstan’s past by paying a visit to the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From the outside, the box shaped white-marbled and glass building is bridged by a set of dramatic steps. As soon as you reach the entrance you’re greeted by a soaring giant golden eagle.

Explore the many exhibits that take you on a journey from the Bronze Age all the way to the modern day. See collections of clothing, jewellery, Scythian burial replicas and tomb artefacts, including the country’s symbolic Golden Man warrior statue. You can also discover exhibitions chronicling WWII and learn more about the Soviet-era.
