Stunning sights

Things to do - sights

This glamorous destination dazzles you the moment you arrive at Dubai International Airport. One of your first sights will be the dizzying Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – which rises from downtown Dubai to the tip of its 828m-high spire. Just a few kilometres away lies the Palm Jumeirah – one of the world’s biggest artificial islands built in the shape of a palm tree. There’s plenty of fantastic hotels to check out here, including the famous Atlantis. And with a monorail running along the ‘trunk’ of the palm, getting around couldn’t be easier.

Shop till you drop

Things to do - shopping

Dubai has become a globally-renowned shopping destination thanks to the gigantic malls and traditional souks scattered throughout the city. With so many options, you’re almost guaranteed to find what you’re looking for. The immense Dubai Mall is a brand-lover’s paradise with more than 1,200 outlets spanning 1.1 million sq/m. But it’s not just about the retail therapy: if you fancy a spot of Lebanese cuisine or even a trip to the aquarium, the gigantic centre has everything under one roof. Nearby, Souk Al Bahar offers a modern take on the traditional Arabian market. Scour quirky shops for authentic jewellery, crafts, textiles and carpets before refuelling at one of its contemporary restaurants and cafes. Elsewhere, the Mall of the Emirates boasts more than 650 shops from around the world, including top global fashion brands, a 14-screen multiplex cinema, and Ski Dubai – the Middle East’s first ski resort.

Relax and indulge

Guide - relax

Foodies visiting Dubai are spoiled for choice. The city’s many hotels provide a wealth of high-quality international cuisine and many of the world’s top celebrity restaurants are represented here – including Nobu Matsuhisa, Gordon Ramsay and Bollywood’s Asha Bhosle.

But Dubai isn’t all fine dining and theme parks – the beautiful natural environment which surrounds the city is also well worth exploring. As well as tackling sand dunes in a 4x4, visitors can travel to Hatta, 134km east of Dubai in the foothills of the Hajar Mountains, to enjoy its Heritage Village – a collection of restored traditional mountain homes – and take a cooling dip in the crystal clear waters of its lake and rock pool.

If you plan to fly to Dubai for sun, sea and sand, the best time to visit is in spring and autumn when temperatures aren’t too overwhelming. Soak up the rays by day and cool down on one of the city’s many rooftop bars. Whatever way you look at it, Dubai is a city that demands attention – you can be sure that the skyline you experience during your trip will be completely different in a year’s time. Things happen quickly here – so get ready for the ride.
